Whether you need to have a new HVAC unit installed or need repairs made on your current unit, there is a good chance that as a homeowner you will need the services of an HVAC company at some point in time. It is essential to choose the right HVAC company to install an HVAC unit or make repairs-- never hire the first HVAC company that you find online. Use the following tips to help you hire the right HVAC company:

Licensed and Insured

Anytime you need HVAC work done, it is extremely important to work with a licensed and insured HVAC contractor. HVAC units are quite complicated and very expensive-- the last thing you want to do is have someone without the right training and licensing working on your HVAC system. Being insured is also a must since if the company is insured their insurance policy will cover accidental damages to your HVAC system or any injuries that may happen on your property while your HVAC system is being worked on.

Be Wary of Quotes Given Over the Phone

When you need to have a new HVAC system installed in your home, avoid HVAC companies that provide price quotes over the phone. A reputable HVAC company will want to inspect your home and view the ducts and your current HVAC unit before they can give an accurate price quote. If you get a price quote over the phone, there is a good chance that you may have to end up paying more since the HVAC contractor never looked at your house or current HVAC unit.

Always Get a Bid in Writing

Anytime you're planning to have a new HVAC unit installed or need your current HVAC unit repaired, make sure that you get the bid or estimate in writing. Doing so will help ensure that you know exactly how much the materials cost, how much you're being charged for labor, and whether or not there is any type of warranty or guarantee on the labor. Having bids in writing will also make it easier to compare several different HVAC companies to determine which one is the best value.

Don't Make a Decision on Price Alone

While most homeowners want to stick to a budget, it is not always in your best interest to hire the HVAC company that gives you the lowest price quote. Take the time to research the companies and don't be afraid to ask for references. Buying a new HVAC system is a big investment and HVAC repairs usually are not cheap, so you want to make sure that you hire a company that can do the job properly the first time.

About Me
It's More Important Than You Think

I used to routinely get calls from HVAC contractors in my area offering annual maintenance contracts. As soon they would identify themselves, I would quickly say no thank you and hang up. After all, my heating and cooling system was working fine. Why would I spend money on services I clearly didn't need? Boy was I wrong! A few years ago, my AC unit suddenly stopped working. I called my HVAC contractor to have it repaired and assumed that my warranty would pick up the bill. That was until I learned my warranty was voided due to a lack of maintenance. Out of nowhere, my decision to ignore those maintenance calls was about to cost me more than a $1,000. I know there are others out there like me. It is my hope that this site will provide them with the knowledge they need to avoid the mistakes I made.
